Select an individual whom you wish to profile. This individual may not be another student, a family member, a high school friend or teacher, a friend’s parent, a recent UIC graduate, or a UIC faculty member. You may wish to choose someone you do not know well, and perhaps even someone who might assist your career in the future. When considering whether a potential interview candidate is newsworthy, consider ways in which he/she demonstrates one or more of the news values discussed in class: impact, timeliness, prominence, proximity, conflict, human interest, and current.

Write a 150-word introduction about this person that briefly explains who the person is and what makes him/her newsworthy. Do not write, “This person is newsworthy because …”

Develop at least ten substantial questions that will provoke more than yes/no responses from this individual. Questions that that begin with “how” or “why” will get your interviewee talking and encourage him/her to open up and express significant thoughts, feelings or opinions. You will need to conduct a little research on your subject to develop appropriate and interesting questions.

Tips for success: Have a focus – You will want to explore the background or character of your subject, so the focus should be on a news angle or a single aspect of the subject’s personal or professional life that is interesting or newsworthy. Keep in mind that biographical information, while important, is background to the news.
