Select a culture that has an established community/presence in your area/city/state. You will focus your research throughout the semester on learning about this group.

Create a presentation using PowerPoint or another tool with your instructor’s approval. A minimum of fifteen slides are required for this assignment. A script/notes must be included in your presentation. The PowerPoint should include the following:

1. Explain the core values and history of the cultural group and describe how the culture became established in your area (e.g., what events, motivations, persons were influential in their establishment in your area?) Include a timeline of significant events (be selective – keep the timeline minimal).

2. Describe how this group has shaped the culture of the area.

3. Research and describe opportunities in which this culture could be experienced locally (e.g., festival, store, restaurant, cultural center, etc.).

2. Find concrete examples that show how this group is represented by local and/or national media (This could include Comic Strips, Newspaper Articles, Advertisements, TV Shows, etc.). Give specific examples of stereotyping and ethnocentrism.

1. How do people from the cultural group communicate their identities through their architecture or how they organize their private and public environments?

2. What is unique about their art or other mass mediated communications (e.g., magazines, books, films, comics)? You may choose to explain an individual’s work or a message/artifact created by a group or organization.

3. How do they establish and manifest roles in relationships?

Choose a film that represents interactions between at least two distinct cultures. The film must be approved by the instructor.

1. As you watch the film, take notes on the nonverbal cues that the characters in the film exhibit. Be as descriptive as possible when describing the nonverbal codes you witness throughout the film.

2. Explain how the nonverbal cues you witnessed in the film compare to the types of nonverbal communication codes used by the culture you have chosen to examine this semester, cite one to two scholarly sources to support your insights.

3. Describe a faux pas that you witnessed in the film. To spot a faux pas, look for nonverbal or verbal communication that is not received well by members of the native culture.
