Your report should start with a strong introduction. The body of a persuasive message should have at least four paragraphs. This template will help you create your message.

NOTE: This template is intended as a guide. You are not limited to the number of lines shown for each paragraph.

Here are some tips:

Introduction

Let the reader know exactly what you are persuading them to do. You want to give an overview of the problem and state what the solution is.

Background of the Issue

In this section, you give the details, such as statistics surrounding the issue. If you don’t clearly delineate the problem with facts, the reader will have no reason to take your side. Personal opinion carries no weight.

Proposed Solution

Here you let the reader know the details of your proposed solution. You must address any cost and personnel issues, if they are relevant. Again, this can’t be personal opinion. It has to be logically presented with facts.

Action Statement

Here is where you ask the reader to adopt your solution/point of view. A deadline might be relevant.

The main headings of the outline should look like this:

It is up to you to add the “A, B, C., etc., under Roman numerals II and III. Use words or phrases only, not sentences or paragraphs.

The Introduction and Action Statement should have only those words. They should not contain any data.
